Meningitis

MENINGITIS occurs when the three layers of membranes lying between the skull and brain become infected by bacteria, virus, or fungi.  These infecting organisms are commonly spread via the bloodstream from acute infections of the nose and throat.

Meningitis is more commonly found in children than in adults.  Symptoms include headache, stiff neck, high fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, changes in temperament, and drowsiness, which may develop into a comma.

Medical attention for meningitis should be sought promptly.  The drug selected for treatment of the disease depends on the type of infecting organism.  During the fever, the body`s needs for vitamin A and C are increased.  A well-balanced  diet adequate in protein is necessary to help the body ward off infection and repair damaged tissue.
